Our villa is in a garden setting, so you might occasionally see small, harmless rodents like dormice, which are part of the local ecosystem.ABOUT CALA D´OR Cala d'Or – or the ‘Golden Bay’ – is a popular beach area on the southeast coast of Mallorca, south of Portocolom and neighbouring the coastal town of Portopetro. In Cala d’Or you really get an all-round holiday experience with wonderful beaches, interesting excursions, well-preserved nature and a varied nightlife.Cala d'Or is a holiday resort well suited to families, couples and yachties. The region is largely characterised by numerous small scenic coves and sandy beaches. In addition to the eponymous Cala d'Or beach, there are many more worth exploring: Cala Gran, Cala Petita, Cala Ferrera, Cala Egos, Cala Esmeralda, Cala Serena, Cala Galera and Cala d'es Forti. There are beaches for all tastes and quieter areas for those who prefer a more relaxed break. Cala d'Or also offers a good mix of bars, restaurants, a diverse nightlife and decent shopping options that even include a handful of chic boutiques. In the heart of Cala d'Or you find a well-equipped marina and the Cala d'Or Yacht Club, most of which is open to the public. The quays are lined with restaurants, bars, supermarkets and banks. With almost 600 moorings, plus many high-end amenities – together with Palma, Port Adriano or Andratx – Cala d'Or is one of the larger and more luxurious marinas on the island. Definitely a great place to stop and explore the town and its surroundings.History and Culture of Cala d’OrStrolling through Cala d'Or you notice a clear difference from the other holiday resorts on Mallorca. The buildings are mostly only two floors high with cubic architecture and whitewashed facades, and often fringed with lines of pine trees. The whole style of Cala d'Or was inspired by Ibiza and planned so from the beginning. Even the hotel construction was strictly regulated to ensure this charming character was maintained. The town attracts a mixed, international crowd of tourists and caters well for most groups. Here you will find lively entertainment during the summer months, but Cala d’Or does become much quieter in off-peak periods.Living in Cala d’OrCala d’Or is typical of an south eastern resort in Mallorca with bustling summers and quiet winters. Many places close out of season. Nevertheless, with more than 4,000 inhabitants, even in winter time there is usually something going on.The community is mixed and if you don’t mind travelling a little for major shopping out-of-season, you can still bag a bargain property. Many of the properties consist of traditional, cubic, whitewashed Mediterranean architectureMajor Attractions in Cala d’OrCala d'Or is an excellent spot for a beach holiday thanks to its impressive facilities and wonderful beaches. Huge fun is the mini ‘train’ which runs along the roads for holidaymakers between the main resort and beaches. The town is also a great base for exploring some of the best natural and historical sightseeing that southeast Mallorca has to offer. The 18th-century historic fort ‘Es Fortí’ – a protected cultural heritage site of the Balearic Islands – is within walking distance and, with its cannons and loopholes, is also an exciting place for children to visit. On the way there you can also enjoy some of Mallorca’s more rugged coastal landscape. Not far from the fort is the ‘Parc Natural de Mondragó’ nature reserve. Wonderful sandy beaches include Ses Fonts de n'Alísals, S'Amarador and Cala Mondragó, which is considered one of the most beautiful on Mallorca. The natural ecosystem of the beach is not disturbed by buildings, the water is crystal clear and the sands are clean. Paths lead to the beaches through the park, which makes for a relaxing walk. There are also a few small beach bars.Other recommended attractions include the magnificent caves ‘Coves de Drac’ and ‘Coves de Hams’ near Porto Cristo, the Bronze Age Talaiotic settlement Sa Canova of Artá, and the beautiful mountain-top town of Capdepera with its wonderfully preserved medieval castle.Things to do in Cala d’OrIf you are looking for a traditional bucket and spade holiday for the family Cala d’Or will provide everything you need. The pedestrianised zones are also handy for those with children in buggies or those with limited mobility. There are plenty of watersport activities in Cala d'Or, thanks largely to its impressive marina. You can rent boats of all kinds (some without a license) and even get your yacht master license here. On the beach you can hire paddle boards, surf boards and other sports equipment. In addition to beautiful spots for snorkeling, there is also the option of scuba trips with one of the dive centres. For a short hike, the ‘Es Fortí’ fortress and the adjacent ‘Parc Natural de Mondragó
