Its streets reflect its past with places such as the Jewish quarter or the popular Plaza del Coso, with its traditional wooden balconies. In addition, it has an important heritage composed, among other monuments, by the Church of Santa María, whose interior houses the Museum of Sacred Art; the Church of San Miguel de Reoyo or the convents of San Pablo, Santa María or Santa Clara. In this town, the birthplace of the Ribera del Duero, there is a wide variety of places to visit as well as the best wineries in the Ribera.Whether you visit Penafiel for a weekend getaway or are thinking of staying longer, you'll soon fall in love with this destination. This medieval fortress was declared a National Monument in 1917 and has now become an emblem for wine tourism in the Ribera del Duero, as the Provincial Wine Museum is located in its southern courtyard.Peñafiel, together with its castle, was a fundamental point in the defensive line of the Douro, both for Christians and Muslims back in the 9th and 10th centuries. From the hill, the castle dominated the valleys of the Douro, Duratón and Botijas rivers, and protected the population. The Provincial Wine Museum was established in Peñafiel Castle in 1999 and since then has received an average of 100,000 visitors a year, numbers that have turned this fortress into a 'place of pilgrimage' for lovers of cultural tourism and wine tourism.A visit to the Provincial Wine Museum is a journey through the history and culture of wine that introduces tourists to the production and elaboration techniques of some of the most famous wines in the world.
